What the glycaemic index measures

The glycaemic index (GI) measures how quickly a carbohydrate food raises blood sugar after it's eaten, ranked on a scale where pure glucose scores 100. It's a measure of one thing — the speed of that rise for a given food eaten on its own — not a verdict on how healthy a diet is overall. A food can be low-GI and still be part of a poor diet, or high-GI and eaten sensibly as part of a balanced one.

Per ICAR–National Rice Research Institute and GI Registry data, Kalanamak's glycaemic index is 49–52, placing it in the low band. White basmati's GI is 71–77, in the high band. That's a measurable, recorded difference in how quickly each rice raises blood sugar when eaten on its own — a fact about the grain, not a claim about what it does for anyone's health.

Why bran and a slow season affect GI

Two things about Kalanamak likely explain its lower number. First, it keeps its dark bran through low-heat milling, where most white rice is polished until the bran is gone; bran and fibre generally slow down how fast starch is broken down during digestion. Second, Kalanamak spends 140–150 days in the field to mature, against roughly 100 days for a modern hybrid rice — a longer season that gives the grain more time to build a different starch structure than a fast-maturing rice does. Both are agronomic facts about how the grain is grown and milled, not statements about what eating it will do for any individual.

What else matters

A single ingredient's GI is one data point, not the whole picture. Portion size changes the total carbohydrate load regardless of GI. What else is on the plate matters too — protein, fat and fibre eaten alongside rice generally slow the overall meal's effect on blood sugar, whatever the rice's own GI number is. None of this is a reason to treat any rice, including Kalanamak, as a solution on its own.
