Why genuine Kalanamak costs more

Kalanamak takes 140–150 days in the field to mature, against roughly 100 days for a modern hybrid rice. That extra month and a half matters more than it sounds: a farmer who plants Kalanamak gives up a second, faster crop in the same season. Processing adds to the cost too — Kalanamak is milled at low heat close to the fields, because hot milling burns off the aroma oils that make the grain what it is; that's slower and more careful than industrial hot milling. On top of that, the GI tag legally restricts genuine Kalanamak to a specific set of districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh, which limits supply compared with rice that can be grown anywhere.

The ₹120/kg red flag

Rice sold very cheap — around ₹120/kg — and labelled "Kalanamak" is worth questioning. Given the economics above, that price usually means one of two things: the rice isn't genuine GI-origin Kalanamak at all, or someone in the supply chain is underpaying the farmer for a crop that took an extra month and a half to grow. Neither is a reason to avoid Kalanamak — it's a reason to check where a given pack actually comes from.
